Have a desire to go shopping but can’t pull your self away from the beautiful white sandy beach. Well, go shopping on the beach to one of the many beach vendors. You name it, they got it - everything from jewelry, pottery, and baskets, to popsicles, burritos, and mangos to massages, jet skiing and parasailing. Bargaining is allowed and encouraged - don’t be taken.
Tasco Jewelry by Noah and Sons
The guys to the left are Noah and his two sons, .Rodrigo and Gile. They are jewelry vendors. You’ll find them out on the beach almost every day. Noah is usually in front of Las Palomas. His sons are usually in front of Manny’s. They sell Tasco made silver earings, rings, necklesses and bracelets.
Oaxacan Artist Igor Garcia
Check out Igor Garcia, the Oaxacan artist. He paints colorful wood animal figurines. He has some of the most unique items on Sandy Beach. He can paint 2 pieces a day, sometimes more with the help of his family. We started buying from him two years ago. We noticed on our last trip to Rocky Point that his technique has improved quite a bit and he is starting offer a wider range of figurines.. In early 2009 I had an opportunity to put together a short interview piece about Rigor. Check it out under his page.
Fresh Mangos on Sandy Beach
For a light lunch buy a mango on a stick from the mango vendors. Excellent. You’ll pay 3 bucks for a 50 cent mango, but it’s well worth it. Very sweet and juicy. Throw some hot chile powered pepper and lime on it for a sweet and spicy flavor. Best of all, the kids will love them.
Braided Hair and Fake Tattoos for the Kids
What a great way to keep the kids occupied for up to an hour. Let them have their hair braided by one of the hair stylist on Sandy Beach. They do good work. But I've heard from my daughter that it can be painful as they weave the hair down to the roots. While they are having their hair braided why not a fake tattoo that will wash off in a couple of weeks. Pick your design and placement. Should take more than 10 minutes for a small heart on the ankle.
So while you are on the beach enjoying that beer or margarita support the local community and the many venders that work all day in the heat to earn a day's wage. It can be fun for the kids and the community.
