~ Mayan Palace Puerto Peņasco is located about an hour’s drive south of Rocky Point at Las Jolla de Cortes. Owned and operated by the International Resort Company Grupo Mayan, the resort was a driving force for the development of the new international airport and water treatment plant for the city. The resorts offers the Jack Nickolis design golf course, Mayan Palace Tennis Courts, and the Brio Health Spa. Grupo Maya operates resorts through out mexico and South America including, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallerta.
The Mayan Resort recently hosted the Arizona Wildcat Invitational Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament on February 21-24, 2009. The tournament included women golfers from many different universities including Tennessee, Washington UCLA, Arizona State, New Mexico and others. Golf tourism is increasing becoming a tourist destination for Puerto Penasco. With all of the bad press in the U.S. Media on the drug violence in Mexico, it was a welcome site to see so many people in attendance in Puerto Penasco, celebrating the game of golf.
