Sandy Beach Resorts Sandy Beach Resorts has a long history in the town of Puerto Penasco. Purchased in 1940 by Duncan Brown, a Mexican Citizen of American descent, the 3,374 acres of land located just northwest of Rocky Point, was originally owned by the Mexican Federal Government. Duncan would travel regularly to the Sonoran Capital of Hermosilio. While en route by way of train, Duncan passed through the quaint little fishing village of Puerto Penasco where he met the white sandy beaches on the Sea of Cortez. Upon his death, Duncan’s widow sold the land to her brother-in-law Gus Brown, Sr. in 1956.
